Invisalign vs Traditional Braces: Which is Right for You?

Team Invisalign, Orthodontics

When it comes to creating a beautiful smile, braces are frequently recommended. This very quickly leads to conversations about which type of braces one should choose while weighing the pros and cons of each option. Two of the most popular are Invisalign aligners and traditional metal braces.

Truth is, both Invisalign and traditional braces work to correct misaligned teeth and leave you with an unforgettable smile. But, deciding on the best option for you comes down to preference, lifestyle, and, of course, your orthodontic needs.

While you will always want to discuss your decision with your orthodontist, let’s take a look at the things you should be taking into consideration.

The Appearance: Invisalign vs. Traditional Braces

Perhaps the first thing you will notice when it comes to the difference between Invisalign and traditional metal braces is their appearance. Traditional braces include metal brackets and wires that are cemented to each tooth. The aligners of Invisalign are made of clear plastic that is nearly invisible to others.

Some people don't like the look of braces while others prefer to be more discreet. You will have to take appearance into consideration when determining which is right for you.

Keep in mind that there are other options available to you as well, such as clear or lingual traditional braces. Your orthodontist should be able to give you a complete list of your options so that you can make an informed decision.

Care and Duration: Invisalign vs. Traditional Braces

The type of braces you choose will ultimately impact the level of care you need to commit to while you have braces - and the length of time you will have to wear them. Take these factors into consideration:

  • Traditional braces are worn at all times while Invisalign aligners can be removed if needed. However, the longer you don’t wear the aligners, the longer your treatment will have to continue.
  • Traditional braces require you to regularly see the orthodontist to tighten wires whereas Invisalign aligners come in sets that you will have with you at home. Sure, you will still need to make regular appointments to check in, but these will be rather simple and quick visits.
  • Traditional braces, for many, result in at least one emergency appointment for things like broken or poking wires.

Results: Invisalign vs. Traditional Braces

When it comes down to the results of each of these options, they are both winners. Traditional metal braces and Invisalign are both great methods for the treatment for correcting bites, straightening teeth, and leaving you with a spectacular smile.

It is important to note, however, that some serious and complex orthodontic issues may be better suited for traditional metal braces. Even still, you have options, such as lingual and clear braces.

Weighing your options and having your questions answered upfront is the best way to reach the best result.
